Citizens Advice has reported an alarming uptick in the number of working individuals, who once managed to make ends meet, now facing financial shortfalls.
While many have witnessed a surge in their earnings, the cost of basic necessities has escalated even faster, according to the charity. The situation seems particularly grim for the self-employed community, with many grappling with “negative budgets”, implying their essential expenditures surpass their income. Astonishingly, 58% of the self-employed individuals the charity assisted with debt issues this year found themselves in this predicament, a notable rise from 39% back in 2019.
Matthew Upton, the Director of Policy at Citizens Advice, shed light on this issue in a report, emphasising the prevailing sentiment that hard work should equate to financial stability. However, he notes, \”Increasingly, our dedicated advisers are encountering working individuals struggling to balance their books, despite having sought expert guidance and having made every effort to reduce expenses and optimise earnings.\”
The data further reveals that the percentage of full-time workers dealing with a negative budget has shot up from 27% in early 2019 to a concerning 39% this year. Upton elaborated, \”An increasing number of those in full-time roles, who used to manage their finances adequately, now find themselves in a deficit.\”
The scenario isn\’t any brighter for part-time workers. Nearly 46% of them who approached the charity are operating on a negative budget, marking an increase from 36% two years ago. Additionally, the charity highlighted that individuals engaged in part-time roles often lean on benefits to supplement their earnings.
